Birding in Central India

The state of Madhya Pradesh also known as Central India is home to impressive number of avian species. Though not in limelight, like for tiger safaris, birders have recently realized the potential of bird watching in the state.
The diverse habitats with dense forest, wetlands and plains increase bird diversity in the state. Many northern bird species migrate to MP during the winters.
 
Large number of bird families is represented in the state. The most popular destinations for bird watching are the protected areas – Wildlife sanctuaries and National Parks. These are excellent for watching forest birds there are few wetland bodies in the state good enough for water birds.
 
On an average one can discover around two hundred fifty bird species in MP but a short stint will yield a les number of bird nevertheless interesting. Of late birding tours have started at Kanha, Pench, Nauradehi and Bandhavgarh National Parks. Other destinations popular for birding are Panna, Pachmarhi, Satpura Tiger reserve, Bori Sanctuary and Karera Bustard Sanctuary.

The diverse habitat in MP provide the bird watchers opportunity to sight new and rare birds which may not have been check listed so far. A large number of migratory birds arrive in winters – waders, warblers, ducks, teals, eagles, to name a few.
 
The best season for birding in India is winter since bird numbers increase with arrival of migrants from North. MP is cold in winters warm clothing is a must.
