Indiana Safari

Wildlife of Central India

Once heavily forested, Central India teemed with wildlife albeit it survives now in scattered habitats. The state of Madhya Pradesh carved out from Central Provinces during the British Raj was later bifurcated into Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh State.
Both the states are home to amazing biodiversity especially of animal life. Known popularly as Central India, Madhya Pradesh has large number of protected areas which are a habitat of Central Indian mammalian species, birds, reptiles and insects.

The keystone specie in most of the protected areas is the tiger and hence MP is known as the tiger state. The largest population of tigers in the wild survives in MP, chiefly in Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Satpura Tiger Reserve. Scattered population of tiger could be found in less numbers in other wildlife sanctuaries as Nauradehi, Bori, and Pachmarhi. Panna and Sanjay National Parks are home to very few tigers. At Panna most of the tigers were poached while the status of tiger is not very in Sanjay National Park. Shivpuri National Park is devoid of tigers since long.

The Central Indian Wildlife constitutes of some major interesting mammals: Tiger, Leopard, Bison, Indian Wolf, Hyena, Jackal, Wild Dog, Swamp deer, Sambar, Chittal, Sloth bear, Barking and Four Horned deer, Nilgai, Chinkara and Mouse deer. Lesser mammals like civet cats, porcupine and ratel are less seen as they are nocturnal in nature.
Birdlife is rich in protected areas like popular tiger reserves and Nauradehi WLS. There are more than four hundred species of birds in MP. The state offers ideal birding opportunity for bird watching.
